Innovative Ideas for your your P.E. classroom.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09760757045921988244noreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8315386176927288811.post-6420395879582626972014-08-27T08:11:00.002-04:002014-08-27T08:11:21.537-04:00The Worst Best Week of the YearBefore you start asking... Oh No, what went wrong, let me explain myself. I tell my students every year during the first week of school that I am so excited to be back at school with new students and especially this year with a new school. This is the absolute truth. I love my job and I feel bad for others who do not get to have the fun I have at school with my students. That right there is the problem with the first week.I tell the kids when they come for the first class, that that day will be the most I talk all year. It just has to be like that. Especially this yer not knowing when I will be leaving. I have to explain everything to them in one week where I usually break it up in to several weeks. We have to talk about rules and procedures etc. I feel bad for them because in their mind I know they are saying to themselves "this is not PE" and I agree. Now we do get moving on the fist day playing a game at the end of class, but my goal is to have the students moving at least two thirds of the class.<br />
<h2>
<br />So what do you do on the first day? </h2>
<b>Squads</b><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih7NAPYGN0fe-rFdXBfdmqHIvWJYlJ8zJjavDnfj1lkoARroMXLYJehf05J2EP9Uo1ev0kupbPbeX5ElH7GVCztd_SLsqL4A9izRmc7Qhdd-YS2dvFlTO2MqcnRvzpQEr_KBjFx3FqFvYf/s1600/Squads.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih7NAPYGN0fe-rFdXBfdmqHIvWJYlJ8zJjavDnfj1lkoARroMXLYJehf05J2EP9Uo1ev0kupbPbeX5ElH7GVCztd_SLsqL4A9izRmc7Qhdd-YS2dvFlTO2MqcnRvzpQEr_KBjFx3FqFvYf/s1600/Squads.jpg" /></a>The first thing I do every year is put the students into squads. Squads are lines that not only help me know what students are present and learn names quicker, but also it gives the students a specific spot to sit when I need them to sit. We are not in our squads for very long each day, but it gives the students direction when they walk in the gym. They know what is expected when they walk into the door.<br />
<br />
<b>Rules</b><br />
Next, we talk about is our PE Rules. My 5 P.E. Rules are based on the whole brain teaching model. I have done a post in the past about my rules called "<a href="http://innovativepe.blogspot.com/2012/11/can-whole-brain-teaching-work-in-your.html" target="_blank">Can Whole Brain Teaching Work in Your Gym</a>". The 5 Rules that we talk about each have a hand signal that helps the student remember the rule and it also helps me out as I can tell a student what he/she is doing wrong from across the gym without having a full out conversation in gym voice mode. <br />
<br />
<b>Procedures</b><br />
Lastly, we talk about all the other procedures that need to be discussed. How to Line up, Where to go for a fire drill and what we would do for a lock down in case there was an intruder in the building. I try not to scare them with those ideas of a fire or lock down, but its best to know what to do if it does happen then to panic and go into chaos mode.<br />
<br />
Before the students leave we play a game. This year we played the game aggravation. I will talk about aggravation in a later post when I talk about instant activities.<br />
<br />
Below is a Blendspace that is an outline of the first day. I planned on using my Smartboard to display this, but it was not ready yet so we made do with the "Not Smart Board" or white board.<br />

<b>Where did you go?</b></h3>
<b>Wow... so I really have missed being on here. When I started this blog I wanted it to be a showcase of all the cool innovative things I was doing in my class. Last year just got away from me and I am now at a new school and really excited to get this going again. I will be updating my blog more often this year and using it not only as a way to spread what innovative things my classes are doing here at Doby's Bridge Elementary, but to also keep all my parents up to date with what their child is doing in PE.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Now as I say that "I'm Back", I will be leaving school very soon. My wife and I are expecting a baby girl this month. I will keep everyone informed on the process and while I know I will enjoy starting a new chapter at home, I will also be really excited about getting back and starting a new professional teaching chapter as soon as I can get back. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<h3>
<b>So... What is New?</b></h3>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijPrxV1EJ916Yko_O-IHuiJ2R7hbPso6kStcqb6qGEAmj5V38hE_XL3tQGmMtAh0iBzTJO1GD7AToEWgGYMteP-nCD7ccQ4rYfYQpmLPFfPwd0WayEszH5bfMJzEnzCG5COZaBoLL2X_ft/s1600/Smart+Board.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijPrxV1EJ916Yko_O-IHuiJ2R7hbPso6kStcqb6qGEAmj5V38hE_XL3tQGmMtAh0iBzTJO1GD7AToEWgGYMteP-nCD7ccQ4rYfYQpmLPFfPwd0WayEszH5bfMJzEnzCG5COZaBoLL2X_ft/s1600/Smart+Board.png" height="185" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(Gym Smart Board will be on a cart)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Well along with being at a new school comes new toys. Now <span style="text-align: center;">let me say when I say new school, I mean NEW... brand new! This the biggest elementary school I have ever been in. Oh and the technology! Each classroom has a SmartTV (seen to the right). These things are amazing! I had a regular smart board in my old gym, but this baby has so many updates. No more projectors means no more shadows! This thing is literally a 72 inch TV! In the Gym we will have one on a cart that can be rolled anywhere in the gym and be stored a way in the equipment room. This year I will be running all my music off an iPod Touch. No more 1990's boom box! Oh and did I mention this school is BRAND NEW! This means new equipment. </span></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Well... I am going to leave you with some pictures of the new gym and surrounding areas. Get excited for a new school year!</b><br />

This unit will be a five class unit that will include dribbling, passing, shooting, and two days of stations for K-2. We will have one day of review stations and one day of small sided game play for 3-5. The students are very excited about this unit and we are too. We have made our first unit Prezi to see if this would help move along the informing process. Prezi is a more active type of power point that is built online so you can view or present it anywhere you have access to a computer. Check Prezi out at <a href="http://www.prezi.com/">www.prezi.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Before we introduced dribbling we went over our expectations and introduced the term of measure up to the students. Since this is my first year at a new school, we have been slowly changing some of the cues throughout the year. It was explained to the students that when the teacher says "measure up" they are to take the ball and put it between their feet. If the ball moves from their feet they are to let it go and get it when the teacher is done talking.<br />
<br />

Dribbling </h4>
In our dribbling lesson we had all the students get a basketball in our single classes and in our double classes we had students partner up. We taught the students about their dominant and non dominant hand and how it was important that they use both hands. There were five cues we really focused on that can be seen to the right. For K-2 we really focused on the first three cues and with 3-5 we checked for all five.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
In the actual lesson we had students dribble 10 times with their dominant hand and then 10 times with their non dominant hand. We taught the students about the crossover (or V dribble because the shape of the ball makes a V) we added movement into the lesson and then had students follow a partner around the gym practicing keeping their eyes forward. The students enjoyed an activity called dribble mania. The students in the class were asked to find a ball dribble it three times and then place it back on the floor and move to a new ball. The goal for me as the teacher was to get them as much practice dribbling while also keeping their head up looking for their next ball. As students they were given the challenge of dribbling every ball in the gym three times. At the end of the lesson with the time we had left I gave the students a chance to practice ball handling tricks or skills. We showed them a video so that they would have an idea of some tricks they could try. We also mentioned that they could clap while the ball was in the air, try and spin the ball on their finger. The main goal was to get the students to be creative and share some of their tricks with a partner. The video we showed is an old Nike commercial that can be seen here ----> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPmfbhVGbIQ" target="_blank">NIKE COMMERCIAL</a>.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09760757045921988244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8315386176927288811.post-36089723189754493422013-03-01T09:18:00.002-05:002013-03-01T09:18:24.668-05:00Family Fitness Night Part 2 <br />

<br />
WOW... my co-teacher did it again! Family Fitness Night was again a great success. Over 150 people attended this event and over 100 children got to experience doing fitness activities with their parents. What a great experience to have with a family and an even better sight to see as a P.E. teacher.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This semesters fitness night was a little different than last semesters in that instead of doing stations the night was split into two main events.<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
A Fun Night for All</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
One of the events was Zumbaatomic. One of our kindergarten teachers stepped up to the plate and showed off her skills teaching four 30 min groups several dances that were fun, but also very good cardiovascular workouts. Students, their parents, and even little brothers and little sisters hopped in on the fun.<br />
<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
What is ZumbAtomic?</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisNkr6nmSMVbkEGjfag3m1CvvfTCg8UQAxAQi5bs5p5cw4Y7VnrPNSGhIGWRDHq_277GmtpWST23I1lD3liN_9qKiFKWY2QEJBUfwb_O36lN56HBURi7pV0_te0e9glC6r-K7NxF7rKlb-/s1600/Zumba+tomic.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="134" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisNkr6nmSMVbkEGjfag3m1CvvfTCg8UQAxAQi5bs5p5cw4Y7VnrPNSGhIGWRDHq_277GmtpWST23I1lD3liN_9qKiFKWY2QEJBUfwb_O36lN56HBURi7pV0_te0e9glC6r-K7NxF7rKlb-/s200/Zumba+tomic.png" width="200" /></a>So you may have heard of Zumba, but what is Zumbatomic? Zumbatomic is a high energy fitness class packed with specially choreographed kid friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, Reggaeton, Cumbia and more. Parents love Zumbatomic because of the effects it has on kids, increasing their focus and self confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Black Light Defend the Den</b></div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdVcFAfbYE3NXkgIDkz8fdniSyUt18VjZpY3Mcsy5H-R6nlxLaviXf3OjMfec3AsEdR0kTYOxrQIcj0GwzIPriqbseajSc1wilZjm_Nwff8DN09mxt_BJjAOwYk68Wlv9mffKgwmnqlJQt/s1600/IMG_4232.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdVcFAfbYE3NXkgIDkz8fdniSyUt18VjZpY3Mcsy5H-R6nlxLaviXf3OjMfec3AsEdR0kTYOxrQIcj0GwzIPriqbseajSc1wilZjm_Nwff8DN09mxt_BJjAOwYk68Wlv9mffKgwmnqlJQt/s320/IMG_4232.JPG" width="211" /></a>Groups are split up into two teams on each side of the gym. Each team will have the same amount of pins (10-15) set up on the back line of their side. Foam balls are lined up in the middle of the gym between the two teams. On the whistle signal, teams will come to the middle, pick up a ball, and try to knock down the pins of the other side by rolling the ball. Teams may guard their pins, but they have to stand on the guard line which is marked by a tape line. Teams are not allowed to cross the center line. When a pin is knocked over it must stay down until the end of the game. Once all pins are knocked down the game is over and the game is reset to be played again. The twist we threw into the normal game of defend the den was we turned the lights out and hooked up some black lights. We then decorated the gym with neon paper, balloons, and tape. <br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Overall it was a huge success and very fun for all the participants. After the event, a survey was sent out to all the participating parents. Through the survey there was some awesome feedback and ideas to make this event and any other events we do that much better in the future. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Thank you Mrs. Dillon and Mrs. Aranda for a great event that definitely built up the moral in the school and in the community. </div>

The four main skills we went over were balancing, rolling, jumping and and landing, and transfer of weight. While we did teach all the skills to every student in the school, our expectations were different for each grade level. While our expectations were different for what skills each grade level could do, how we assessed each grade level was different also.<br />
<br />
<b>Gymnastics Assessment K-2</b><br />
<br />
To assess K-2 we set up several stations where the students could demonstrate their knowledge and ability to do each of the skills we had worked on during the unit. These stations included cue cards for a reminder on how to do each of skills. We as teachers walked around and visually assessed each student making sure they were using good from and following directions.<br />
<br />
The stations are shown below:<br />

Gymnastics Assessment 3-5 </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For 3-5 we use an assessment that challenges the students to create a routine concepts from all the categories we learned during our unit. Each student is responsible for their own routine. Each Routine must include a beginning balance and a different ending balance which are both held for 3-5 seconds. Between the two balances the students must include 4 different concepts that were learned during the unit. The students may also use a turn or spin and a change of speed as one of their concepts in the routine. Once the students create their routine they will then practice. When the routine is memorized and perfected the teacher will come over and grade the routines based on following directions and following the order on their routine sheet. </div>

Sorry I have been so quiet lately. We have been working on gymnastics in all of our classes which is my favorite unit of the entire year. I got this lesson from Karen Roof (see previous post) when I was doing my student teaching a few years back. This unit is very controlled and a good change of pace. Below I am going to lay out the different lessons that we have taught this year. The first four lessons of this unit were taught the same to K-5. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<strong>Week 1 - Balancing</strong><br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
In our first week of gymnastics we challenged the students with the question "what is a balance?". Most of the classes went straight to talking about a balance beam. While that was not the answer we were looking for we were able to guide the students to the answer we were looking for by talking about what you do on a balance beam. The students told us that you need to have control and not fall. The definition we used for a "balance" was to stay completely still for 3-5 seconds in one position. We told the younger students we could count seconds in alligators (1 alligator, 2 alligator...) and the older students that they could count in Mississippi's, or one thousands. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvsK_tK-hs1bd0cxxylEf0kcMTRU14B4Ua-zjqMn1g7mh9nbY1_kNy15H8jtfEG5QQXp-wBmbef14hJILKpMEXPXH8cGkn52yb5jZMpuZ4Snbv0N-nfKDAZ9RLbJiCVlOUpjIdH-f1edi/s1600/standing_on_head.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="175" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtvsK_tK-hs1bd0cxxylEf0kcMTRU14B4Ua-zjqMn1g7mh9nbY1_kNy15H8jtfEG5QQXp-wBmbef14hJILKpMEXPXH8cGkn52yb5jZMpuZ4Snbv0N-nfKDAZ9RLbJiCVlOUpjIdH-f1edi/s200/standing_on_head.jpg" uea="true" width="200" /></a></div>
We then had students practice balancing on different body parts (balance on 2 feet and 1 hand) and then on different numbers of body parts (can you balance on 4 body parts). Later in the lesson we had students move to music using different locomotor skills and we would yell out a number. When the music stopped the students would quickly get into a balance with that many body parts and hold it for 3-5 seconds. We extended our 3-5 lesson by having the students work on partner balances. Below are a few pictures of some of the different partner balances our students came up with. <br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>Week 2 - Rolling</strong><br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpEP6LKY99zI1ALZvO9fbUD79B9sT-bgRyr6GwudJj74XRD8JS62Z0fA0axv1s8gdP6FHXMGAzV6OA4L-Lbg9DJoQzJn8xY_v7rIT-mm2ZLed0qxXZOFCpxaWNa8lb3qsxdhy79anF3z8c/s1600/Rolls.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>In week 2 we moved on to the next skill in our unit which was rolling. We talked about 4 main types of rolls. They were the log roll, egg (side) roll, forward, and backward roll. We taught these rolls starting with the easiest (log) and moved to the hardest (backward) </div>

<strong>Week 3 - Jumping and Landing </strong></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Before I talk about jumping I want to first thank the <a href="http://www.fortmillsc.org/TownServices_PublicWorks.aspx" target="_blank">Town of Fort Mill</a> for letting us use 10 recycle bins. We used these recycle bins for jumping boxes. I took the bins reinforced the tops with pieces of plywood attached with bolts through the already existing drainage holes. We taught the students to jump using a few simple steps. 1) Bend knees and swing arms back, 2) Throw arms in air and extend knees, and 3) Jump and land on two quiet feet. We taught our students that landing on two quiet feet meant landing on the balls of their feet with two bent knees. We first only allowed the students to jump and land off of the boxes. After they showed us they could do this we started letting them do other things like making shapes in the air (tucks, pikes, splits) and spins. </div>

<strong>Week 4 - Transfer of weight</strong></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
This is most of our advanced students favorite weeks. This is wear we do our mule kicks, handstands, cartwheels and round offs. We discuss that a transfer of weight is actually what the name states, transferring your weight from your hands to your feet and back to your hands again. </div>

My next blog post will take us through Week 5 and 6 which for the younger students were stations and older students building, practicing, and performing a routine. I am really excited about the gymnastics unit we are working on right now and there will be a post on the coming soon. While other posts are in progress I have decided to write a post about why I teach the way I do and what motivates each and every day.<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I received my paper work to take a student teacher next year. While I was filling the paperwork out it got me thinking about why I teach P.E. and what makes it so enjoyable to me. I recently changed schools to get closer to home and could not have chosen a better situation to be in myself. I will have to give all that credit to God. I have the most amazing Principal who luckily is a former Physical Educator himself. He is true teachers principal and has produced outstanding numbers in his four years at PKES. What more could you ask for out of principal.</div>

I looked at him and said "I don't know how you do it, I could not and would never want your job." That is when the question came up that sparked this post. He looked at me with a smile on his face and said "Well then... what do you want to do.?" Without even having to think about it I knew what I was going to say. "I want be the Karen Roof of Fort Mill!"</div>

If you do not, you are missing out. Ms. Roof was my mentor when I did my student teaching. She has also been the mentor to many other teachers spread around the nation who graduated from the Physical Education Department at Winthrop University. Ms. Roof, from my knowledge, has taken a student teacher every year for at least the last 10 years. Some years she takes one or two, but I know for a fact that she has had at least four in one year (a half semester at a time). </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfWlSd0GQ3G3E0q_mNM1Ja3YWwK3pYyvOGrvy5qSx705hdEfZoPaa64ssNF8Y0rB2Us6xNeHL_OoIZnyxsQH9iXzZmf6vuUPfydv_xU0W0hQmzx5Tz-guLhyS1f61cW9E7wEKXao58OTO1/s1600/PESH.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; height: 267px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; width: 186px;"><img border="0" oea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfWlSd0GQ3G3E0q_mNM1Ja3YWwK3pYyvOGrvy5qSx705hdEfZoPaa64ssNF8Y0rB2Us6xNeHL_OoIZnyxsQH9iXzZmf6vuUPfydv_xU0W0hQmzx5Tz-guLhyS1f61cW9E7wEKXao58OTO1/s1600/PESH.gif" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
While I have picked up many teaching techniques along the way, I would say that the majority of my teaching style comes from Karen Roof. Why you ask? It is not because she is a good teacher or even a great teacher. It is because she is the best Elementary PE Teacher I have ever met, seen, or heard, about. She has been named teacher of the year at least 6 or 7 times at several different schools. The kids love her, yet they know there are expectations and consequences. She is all over the place helping out where ever she is needed. She is loved by her colleagues and she is a great mentor to all up and coming teachers. That's right I said teachers not just P.E. teachers. She also teaches a class at Winthrop for Elementary Education students on how to incorporate movement in their classrooms. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Now then. Will I ever live up to being the Karen Roof of Fort Mill. I do not know? She has some big shoes to fill, but I will retire trying to live up to the standards and expectations she has set for all P.E. teachers across the country. So why do I teach the way I do and love my job so much? I owe 99% of it to my role model, mentor, colleague, and friend Karen Roof. Without her and of course my great education from one of the top education schools in the nation, (Winthrop University) I would just be your average Joe P.E. Teacher. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Do you have someone who you look up to and that has inspired you to get to where you are today? </div>

We haven't had any major cuts in the Fort Mill School District and if I really really wanted something I am sure there would be a way to get funds to buy it. By saying this, I do not mean that we have an abundance of money laying around and if we did, that we would actually use it. I just have the mind set of "if you can build it cheaper, why buy it?" If you're like me or you're on a strict budget, this blog entry is going to be right up your alley. <br />
<br />
How many of you have flipped through the various catalogs and just thought that some of the materials are just too darn expensive? I have a stack of magazines that sit on my desk that I thumb through and compare prices when deciding whether to buy or build. Some things you just have to buy and others are reasonably priced, but there is a lot of equipment out there that's easier to build than to shell out the money to buy it. <br />
<br />
Below, I am going to list several different pieces of equipment as well as provide pictures, prices, and materials of what it cost to buy and build the comparable equipment. <br />

For almost half the cost of the store bought version you can have your own sturdy customized Corn Hole boards. You can buy cheap beanbags, use the ones that you have in your gym, or spend 10-20 dollars for custom made beanbags. Now, if you are not only good with power tools, but also a sewing machine then cut even more off this price. Find some cool fabric, beans or corn, and make your own beanbags. <br />

I built our schools ladder golf sets from the website listed below. Very easy to build! The best thing about building these yourself is that you know what your getting for you buck. You can make your own bolos by drilling holes in golf balls and threading rope through the holes or you can spend a couple of dollars and buy the bolos from your local Walmart or Target. <br />

<b> What do I need? </b><br />

The picture to the left shows everything you will need to build your ladder golf sets. I would also invest in a good set of PVC cutters, or if you have a hand saw this will work just as well. <br />

Alright I am back from winter break and ready to get back to work. Today's blog post will not be something I have come up with on my own, but things I have learned about effective P.E. teachers. There are many characteristics that make up an effective P.E. teacher and most of them can be learned, practiced, and perfected. Whether you have these characteristics or strategies can make or break a good teacher. In previous blog articles I have discussed classroom management and this post can also be beneficial to keeping your classroom safe and under control <br />

Your tone is something that is very important when teaching, especially in a big gym. You have to be able to project your voice so that everyone in the gym can here you. This can be very easy when the gym is quiet, but what happens when you are calling down a student who may be a risk to others or just not falling directions. Your voice needs to be loud and clear, but not the point where the students think you are screaming at across the gym. My first year of teaching, students had trouble hearing me and I found myself repeating things over and over. I have since learned how to project from deep down in my chest so that my voice travels across the room without going home with a raspy throat from screaming all day. This takes practice and trial and error. You will have to play with your tone and may get that look of "why are you screaming at us" before you get the right tone. When you do figure out how to project your voice it will be a beneficial tool in your classroom management. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">That may be a little too far with "the look"!</td></tr>

In my first semester of college, one of my Physical Education Professors, Dr. Stevie Chepko would give you this look when you were not doing what you were supposed to do be doing. She looked at you and you would feel like there was a hole burning through you. This was very effective because you knew you were in trouble when this happened and you wanted crawl under the table and hide. Later that semester she demonstrated using this look with Pre K students. She could control a class just by looking at them. At that point in my career I was amazed of the power of just a look could have on someone. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Classic "Look"... Could not leave this one out!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Your look should be one that says I see what you are doing or I am disappointed in what you just did. The key to "the look" is to create an appearance that when you look at your students they either wonder "what the did wrong?" or they know that they are guilty and have been caught. I have found that the best way to test this out is to find a student that is not doing anything wrong and give them your "look" and if they look confused or approach you to see what they did wrong then "the look" is doing its job. Now be careful looks are a powerful thing. You want the students to know your disappointed, but not to the point where they are scared to the point of crying. (I apologize to my past kindergarten classes while trying to perfect my "look"). </div>

Do you have that sense of having eyes in the back of your head? If you do not then you are missing out on a lot that is going on in your class. In my gym I try to always position myself where I can see the whole class. This is not possible all the times and are times that there are some students to your rear or side. This is the time when you need to have this sense. Now of course no one actually has eyes in the back of their head unless you are not going to wear one of those bicycle mirrors on your head, but there are other ways of knowing what is going on behind you. Listen to your class, when you are working one on one with a student keep your ears open for any thing that may sound odd. You can also keep your eyes on the students in front you as they will react to what other students may be doing behind you. Lastly some people just have that sense of feel that something is not right. You know if you have it and if you don't you will have to really use your other senses to help you out during these situations. </div>

I am sorry it has been a while since my last post. I have been on the road visiting family up and down the east coast. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and are getting ready for the New Year. I have a ton of new blog ideas that I am really excited to share with you. I would like to thank those of you that emailed me and made posts asking when I was going to get back on the ball and put up another post! So here you go...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH639IhDnStLoyHQyzzYQ6H86Yg53EW7VO03dO9nWmBuXVGKJC-aOgCuCfKG6M1_ephFkrdLB8MMwgzIwRC4yvJRmNmrCEpcJTjE18uHM2G1VHlJ5GQ3Lef9HwIvp94e4YgTJa9YtfeMqy/s1600/pin-drop-12.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH639IhDnStLoyHQyzzYQ6H86Yg53EW7VO03dO9nWmBuXVGKJC-aOgCuCfKG6M1_ephFkrdLB8MMwgzIwRC4yvJRmNmrCEpcJTjE18uHM2G1VHlJ5GQ3Lef9HwIvp94e4YgTJa9YtfeMqy/s1600/pin-drop-12.png" /></a></div>
Was that a pin I heard dropping in your gym? That is definitley not the sound of FUN! I understand there are times when you need and want your class to be quiet, but other times its time to turn up the music! Being in the car and over the last week I have been able to listen to a lot of music. I am the kind of person that likes all types of music. Some of the music I listen to could be used in the classroom setting and others not so much. Not because of the language just becasue of the content. I mean whether I am talking about my good ole Christian Rock or half of the Top 40 songs, someone is going to have a problem with the content of the songs. <br />
<br />
Please do not just throw in your Jams mix or turn on the radio! You will be receiving an email, phone call, or even visit from a parent. So the question is how do you play music without offending anyone or getting a note from a parent asking where their son or daughter learned the lyrics to a certain song. To most parents the music played on your Top 40 Station is OK for their children. Others would frown upon those stations. There are three options I have come up with while searching for music for my classroom which I will get to later but first lets talk about when to use music in your classroom. <br />
<br />
<h3>
What do I use music for?</h3>
EVERYTHING! You can use music for just about anything on any given day. Here is a list of ideas of when to use music.<br />

Use Music:<br />
<br />
To get students excited when they walk in<br />
As a warm up <br />
As part of your lesson<br />
As part of game <br />
To stop and start stations<br />
To dance <br />
For Aerobics<br />
As a cool down<br />
<br />
<br />
I am sure there are many more ways you guys can think of or actually use music in your classroom and I would love to hear about it!<br />
<h3>
What kind of music should I get?</h3>
<h4>
Option #1 Kidz Bop! </h4>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgXvHVNNvVUXLL0QZHLm1EzOHY2c10OJjrXbeEGMNn-qhgYRM8C74ZAb2AzFmwcSYpWkJeu8-9kZcImZevHU6hot5qlGr0zP9l5H8pOsOYi3UDpSgj87fIDpAuGtyIbK5XiTpzcYlcTmjS/s1600/Kidz_bop.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgXvHVNNvVUXLL0QZHLm1EzOHY2c10OJjrXbeEGMNn-qhgYRM8C74ZAb2AzFmwcSYpWkJeu8-9kZcImZevHU6hot5qlGr0zP9l5H8pOsOYi3UDpSgj87fIDpAuGtyIbK5XiTpzcYlcTmjS/s200/Kidz_bop.png" width="200" /></a></div>
Kidz Bop... What is Kidz Bop? <strong>Kidz Bop</strong> is a brand of compilation albums featuring child session musicians performing contemporary music. The albums are composed of "kid-friendly" versions of the latest songs on Top 40 radio and are sung by young children. Now of course this option would not be popular with the middle and high school students, but my elementary students sometimes can not even tell the difference between the the "real" version and the Kidz Bop version. Kidz Bop has a all the most recent songs that you hear on the radio and even better they also record Holiday Themed music. I currently own the Halloween and the Christmas playlist. </div>
<br />
<h4>
Option #2 Go Instrumental </h4>
This is a good option for all levels. If the students not the lyrics then they can sing along, if they do not they can enjoy the music. Not only can you find top 40 songs that are instrumental, but you can also find some good mixed techno music such as David Guetta. David Guetta does a lot of the background beats and music for most of the top songs these days. Most of his stuff is upbeat and can be found with or without singing. This is great for dance units, step aerobics, and running activities where you want the students to be motivated for long periods of time. <br />
<h4>

</h4>
<h4>
Option #3 Create your own P.E. Playlist</h4>
If the first two options do not suit you do not keep your gym silent. Self select songs you like that are appropriate for your age level. You can listen to the songs and make sure that there are not any cuss words or content issues and build your own playlist. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/MP3-Music-Download/b/ref=amb_link_354974502_5/175-8724117-3931213?ie=UTF8&node=163856011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=01020R02YVAA5427VZ5M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1387735802&pf_rd_i=5174" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZK-bsa699G_38-b1Nc7tmIxI9TSOyGgofBXxIT9PHYHyDsvX6WI98aG4QHQw8BGImXtGs_35gK_OJnQ6bev36LutvmtTOCVhVf59xj1TveSe-QCVbVztj0LXGyGQev4keyqCG6SDX9NMQ/s200/amazon-logo1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Most of you are aware already, but with the the technology we have these days finding music is easier than ever. You do not have to run to the store and buy a full CD that has two songs you need on it and bust your budget creating your library. With sites like Apples ITunes and Amazon you can buy individual songs and build your own playlist on your computer, Apple device, or MP3 player.</div>

The goal was to bring parents and members of the community together with our kids while also showcasing some of the things we are doing in our Related Arts classes. My co teacher Mrs. Dillon organized a wonderful night of family fun with her Family Fitness Night. I asked her to write a guest blog entry for Innovative P.E. in hope that maybe some of our fellow P.E. teachers around the world would like the idea and try to plan events similar to hers. She did an amazing job with the event and got a lot of great feedback from parents, teachers, and students who all loved her event. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">There are many reasons to have a Family Fitness Night at your school. The most obvious reason to have a Family Fitness Night is to promote the importance of being physically active, no matter what your age or skill level is. The activities that our students and their families participated in were created so that all family members could participate. Another reason to have a Family Fitness Night is to promote a sense of community within our school. Our principal is a huge advocate for community involvement as well as building a community throughout our entire school. Family Fitness Night provides students and their families an opportunity to meet other students and families which ultimately builds our school community as a whole.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

I first thought about who I would offer our fitness night to and eventually decided on having one fitness night for K-2nd and another one for 3rd – 5th.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I then thought about where I wanted Fitness Night to take place. With the limited amount of outside space at our school, as well as unpredictable weather, I decided to use the gym. Next, I had to figure out the best way to include as many families as possible. I decided on offering two sessions that were one hour each.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In each of the sessions there were 8 stations with between 6-8 participants at each station. This allowed me to include about 130 people. After figuring out how it was going to be structured, I began to plan which stations I wanted to include and how they would be laid out in the gym. I created station explanations that were hung on the wall at each station, as well as a station map (see above picture) that showed families how to rotate to each station. Additionally, all equipment that I was going to need had to be organized by station. This allowed for easy setup the night of the event as well as making sure that all equipment that was needed was available to be used. Finally, about two weeks before the event, registration forms were sent home with all students in K- 2nd Grade. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As forms were returned, they were entered into a spreadsheet and then were sent a confirmation e-mail that they were registered. Once all available spots were full, all additional registrations were sent an e-mail letting them know that fitness night was completely full. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">As a P.E. teacher, Fitness is an inportant part of our cirriculum, but how do we teach fitness in a way that students walk away thinking exercise is fun.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This would actually be a very easy task if all students liked to play sports, but this is not the case. We could set up game play for many of our envision games such as soccer, basketball, team handball and<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>hockey, and let them go go go. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The challenge is to disguise fitness in away that your atthletic students will find the competitive nature and your non athletic students will see<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the same activty as a fun non competitive activity rather than excercise or sport. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Over the next couple of days I am going to open up the floor to you guys to chime in and give away all of your most prized secrets on fitness activities. This is the not only the season of giving, but also think about how great it feels to help some one out that really needs it. There are many teachers out there that freeze up and revert to the same boring activities that students despise. How many times can you possibly run the pacer, the mile, do mass sit ups and push ups or run relay races? <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">

<div class="MsoPlainText" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The activities you share do not have to but can be original activities. Most of the activities that any of us do have been seen or found somewhere else and modified to work for us. Why reenvent the wheel if you don't have to. I will get the ball rolling with two activities that have been a hit with our students. </span></div>

Push-up Handshake</h3>
<div class="MsoPlainText" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The first activity is called push up hand shake. Challenge your students to get with a partner and come up with a new super secret handshake. Tell them that their handshake must incorporate atleast 15 touches, 10 being in the push up position. Give the students 10 or 15 minutes to come up with and practice their routine with their partner. When they<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>have memorized and perfected<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>their routine, they can get with another group and perform their handshake.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Depending on if you are doing this as a warm up or an actual part of class, you can then get them to switch partners and create a new handshake.</span></div>

<o:p></o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The second activity is called PE UNO. This game can be played with<a href="http://www.walmart.com/ip/Uno-Cards/22002496" target="_blank"> UNO cards</a> that you can by at your local bargain store or you can make your own cards. Split your students into groups where they will work togeter to make decisions. Each small group is playing their own little game and will need their own set of cards and rule sheet. One student will pick a card and the group will do what that card says.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>After the whole group has completed the activity the next person in the group will pick a card. There is no end of the game so it is important to keep an eye on your students and allow water breaks as a group or as individuals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Below are the different cards that are in the deck and what we have made them represent.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Holiday Projector Activity</h3>
I am the kind of teacher that likes to spice things up during the holidays. My theory is that if the kids are going to be excited and anxious, then why not throw something at them that will blow them away. Holiday activities are an easy way to do this. Many of these activities can be molded to fit your classroom or changed slightly so that it is just different enough to do again. <br />
<br />
For Halloween we tried out a new activity that my co teacher found on another blog we follow called <a href="http://kinesitechnology.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kinesitechnology</a>. We tried it and it was such a huge hit that we have designed our own Christmas Holiday version to try out this upcoming holiday season. This is just a small snip-it of what this activity looks like. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/b1NbdqrGP48?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="border: currentColor;">
The activity requires one or two LCD projectors that instantly turns the gym into an obstacle course. We had to borrow one from a friend, but are in the process of trying to find old projectors that are not being used in the district. We used Power Point and displayed it life size on the wall to make the animations. Students look at their shadow against the wall and try and make it across the screen without hitting any of the obstacles.
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="border: currentColor; text-align: center;"><div style="border: currentColor;">
This is one of the configurations that you can use. You can</div>
put the projectors on any wall you want so that it will work <br />
with your gym. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<div style="border: currentColor;">
Depending on how many students and how much space you have, you can use one or two projectors. We added extra obstacles (hula hoops, balance beam, scooters) on the floor between the screens so that students would be spaced out more and not have to wait in lines. The students move counter clockwise around the gym. The biggest problem I saw with the activity at Halloween was when the students got to close too the screen. If they get too close they will not be able to see the animations on the wall, which then defeats the purpose. This time, we helped out the students by putting a line on the floor to keep them the right distance away from the wall. Another thing we are really pointing out during this activity is to face the wall. When students do this, they tend to slow down and can see what they are doing more clearly. When they face sideways they tend to run through hitting all of the obstacles, because they are not able to see them as well. With these modifications and being able to do this a second time, we are expecting great things out of this activity! </div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<div style="border: currentColor;">
Below I have provided the PowerPoint we are using for this activity. If you are looking for something new, this might be the activity for you. Just like any idea, make it work for you. (monitor and adjust) To view the PowerPoint presentation we used, click the picture below. If you decide to try this activity, use this PowerPoint or you can easily make your own for any season or occasion. </div>

Other Obstacles We Used</h3>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
Below are pictures and short descriptions we used around the gym between the two screens. These are just some we came up with using our existing equipment. The signs are made from a batting tees wrapped in streamer paper. Then, we cut out letters, glued, laminated and taped the top to the post. The snow around the bottom is just bulletin board paper. You can use old fabric or even cheap sheets for this effect too. </div>

I have been working on a few blog articles, but none of them are ready to be published quite yet. I need to record a few videos, and I am waiting on some guest blogs to be finished up. I thought I was stuck, but today I was walking in the hall and was thinking about all the runny noses, coughs, and wait how many Guest Teachers (that is was we call Substitute Teachers at my school) do we have in the building today? This got me thinking, why don't I write a quick blog about best practices when you can not be in the building. </div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="border: currentColor;">
Are You Ready? </h3>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc98L-FfPyg6Eh4lGzJuZUANFEOOsx0ErFTOUYmgifXYM-DM97VIB_FyCpgNA1v65CYOqGKRZIA8Ni2LhCeOG0nssClQymS7C7F71kiMgCeJywkpF0o06U3bF0mADdxrMXw4DW7mDtT-Cn/s1600/No+Dodgeball.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOCEL_ltjHhMbYMxfJkOfciQ3AKcWtO-64n2CnHPXqRcjA07xM8oVaG_zUqloBBti4VpXmE7eaYBHA7OIEjz8JGrxPkCLUP_Dh7UjxttcRuhaKw1qEx3fDgOl1WeSl4GxWOZwIqCfz4kuP/s1600/sick_in_bed11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOCEL_ltjHhMbYMxfJkOfciQ3AKcWtO-64n2CnHPXqRcjA07xM8oVaG_zUqloBBti4VpXmE7eaYBHA7OIEjz8JGrxPkCLUP_Dh7UjxttcRuhaKw1qEx3fDgOl1WeSl4GxWOZwIqCfz4kuP/s320/sick_in_bed11.jpg" tea="true" width="273" /></a>So you wake up tomorrow morning and you feel like a truck hit you! You are coughing, sneezing, and of that achy body. Are you ready to make the call? Now listen... I HATE to miss days, but there comes a time when you have to consider the well being of your students and fellow teachers. I am very lucky this year! I have a fantastic co teacher and we think very similar. We are trying the team teaching thing this year which has its benefits and pitfalls, but one of the benefits is that if one of us is sick the other can lead class that day while the sub helps out. </div>
<br />
<h3>
Well You Are Lucky, But What About Me? </h3>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
Not all teachers are this fortunate. Either they are the only teacher at their school or teach separate classes as their co teacher. If this is the case, do you have your sub folder ready for that emergency morning? Is it visible and/or does someone know where to find it. I can tell you from experience, that is the worst feeling. Waking up feeling like that and then have to drag yourself out of bed to send in or call and tell someone where to find your sub plans. I made that mistake once and it will never happen again. It is not that I did not have sub plans, but that I was working on them and had them in my book bag at home with me. </div>
<br />
<h3>
What is in Your Folder?</h3>
<div class="separator" style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNMH9PV_xhltJ_MGQAeJwhvtheg1hPPnzmPlOp7HmVnIVvLzPdwSzwTpsaPUWpm3itaxB_QoeLWIm4UXRbIM6VN_J8AtDOIZPIXD7nij46Wa3sZyBdfvdceEYAoJG4YAPEK-YHIvDWibqW/s1600/Sub+Plans+Top+Secret.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNMH9PV_xhltJ_MGQAeJwhvtheg1hPPnzmPlOp7HmVnIVvLzPdwSzwTpsaPUWpm3itaxB_QoeLWIm4UXRbIM6VN_J8AtDOIZPIXD7nij46Wa3sZyBdfvdceEYAoJG4YAPEK-YHIvDWibqW/s1600/Sub+Plans+Top+Secret.png" tea="true" /></a></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
OK... You have your folder... Check! It is known where it can be found... Check! Now what are your plans for the sub? Are they your actual lesson plans for that day or is it a totally different activity unrelated to what you have been doing. We sat down this year and discussed this very topic. At the beginning of the year we decided to teach a few easy games that practiced some of our standards and put all of the equipment needed for those games into a mesh bag. If it is not in the bag, it is clearly visible in our storage room. This way the sub isn't runing around looking for equipment, doing any major set up, or wondering which size or type of ball to use. </div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
</h3>
<h3>
Sub Plan Check List</h3>
These are some things that I think about when creating a sub plan:<br />
<ul>
<li style="border: currentColor;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc98L-FfPyg6Eh4lGzJuZUANFEOOsx0ErFTOUYmgifXYM-DM97VIB_FyCpgNA1v65CYOqGKRZIA8Ni2LhCeOG0nssClQymS7C7F71kiMgCeJywkpF0o06U3bF0mADdxrMXw4DW7mDtT-Cn/s1600/No+Dodgeball.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc98L-FfPyg6Eh4lGzJuZUANFEOOsx0ErFTOUYmgifXYM-DM97VIB_FyCpgNA1v65CYOqGKRZIA8Ni2LhCeOG0nssClQymS7C7F71kiMgCeJywkpF0o06U3bF0mADdxrMXw4DW7mDtT-Cn/s200/No+Dodgeball.png" tea="true" width="200" /></a>Do you have all your information? (Plans, Class Management, Class Rosters, Class Schedule, Emergency Plan) </li>
<li>Are the directions clear enough and/or in enough detail for anyone to understand? (Draw Pictures!)</li>
<li>Have you told the sub where to find the equipment needed?</li>
<li>Is the activity safe?</li>
<li style="border: currentColor;">Will the kids enjoy the activity? (unhappy or bored kids = major behavior problems for a Sub)</li>
<li>Will the sub enjoy the activity? (Are the kids screaming all day)</li>
<li>Did you leave a whistle or let them know how you get the attention of your class? (most subs are in the classroom - not a gym - when they come in, so a whistle might not be part of their arsenal) </li>
</ul>
These are just a few ideas of what I feel is important to ask yourself when building your sub plans. <br />
<br />
What do you do when you are sick? What do your plans look like? What is your favorite activity to leave for a substitute teacher when you are sick? I would LOVE to see some feedback! Dance What...!?!</h3>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

When I was in college and even my first year of teaching, I had already decided I was too cool to have to teach dance. I am not a good dancer, nor do I enjoy dancing in public. It really was not until this year that I found my confidence with dancing in my classroom. I don't know if it was because I was starting over at a new school or that I just realized that it the kids don't care what look like and neither should I. From the first day of school I was dancing while we played music for our stations, (looking like a total dweeb to any outsider who might have walked by the gym) but that was that. It is not about me anymore! It is now about showing my students you do not have to be good at something to try it, nor do you have to be good at it to have fun doing it. </div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Some of you are thinking to yourself "what are you talking about". You have no problem dancing in public, so dancing in front of the kids is probably a cinch. Dancing might be your thing, but I am sure you can relate with me on some level because, most teachers have at least one area where they are not as comfortable with than everything else they teach all year long. </div>

We are teaching the Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, Electric Slide, Cotton Eye Joe, and we may (depending how brave we are) try and tackle the ever so popular, yet difficult Gangnam Style dance with our older students. We chose line dancing not only because it is easily organized, but it also gives students who are not as good a place to blend in the crowd without getting embarassed unlike square dancing or partner dancing where there is no place to be just OK. </div>

Every so often, since this blog is meant to be one that shares ideas and best practices, I will ask for help from my followers. <strong>My challenge or question to you is what kind of dance do you teach in your gym, and to those who are not teachers (or are not teachers yet), what would you teach in your gym if you had that chance?</strong></div>

Whole Brain What? </h3>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjavby8EUgzP8zu2xel-kChA-ttElulU5luBQa26kb4QI_tjqnjj6Y3xQglVZHPNlbuL4v0T1sPCenK76J44IHgDzgtQvlIJvI-xlt3sjNjT3agJ3k_X8L1V0QovmSjrVNC1mELFpmuph-K/s1600/cartoon-brain-1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjavby8EUgzP8zu2xel-kChA-ttElulU5luBQa26kb4QI_tjqnjj6Y3xQglVZHPNlbuL4v0T1sPCenK76J44IHgDzgtQvlIJvI-xlt3sjNjT3agJ3k_X8L1V0QovmSjrVNC1mELFpmuph-K/s1600/cartoon-brain-1.gif" tea="true" /></a>I have been teaching for three years now and I have used three different styles of classroom management. Before this year I had not found something I absolutely loved. I did however know some of things I did not want. I did not want to have to talk over students or have students raise their hand to ask a question, me stop class and them ask if they could use the bathroom. I did not want to have to send my upper elementary students to "timeout". Oh and I definitely did not want to go home with a headache everyday with whistle echoes in my head. So it happened that when moving to a new school, the Whole Brain Teaching philosophy fell right into my lap. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
Let me first say that I am not saying this is the only way or best way to teach your class, but as one of my new favorite TV characters Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty might say "Hey, It works for me Jack". What is Whole Brain <span style="font-family: inherit;">Teaching? The concept of</span> whole brain teaching is to engage a student’s entire brain, which will increase learning ability. It is a teaching style which introduces concepts and ideas to a student in a way they are most likely to retain it as well as providing the best atmosphere emotionally which allows a greater degree of comprehension and retention. In laments terms it means that you teach or manage your class using a variety of senses and using both sides of the brain. In my class we do not use all of the WBT concepts. They just will not work in a gym setting. But as for the classroom management portion and a few other concepts, my co-teacher and I have adapted WBT in a way that works for us. <br />
<br />
<h3>
Class-Yes</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha0E8N_QYZDYjd6sv1MpfXx3X_c4JACxtCuLYG6tkqjyEXtNCHo6MJp09Ij8-hxS7t63VnIe4sY_v5Z5fRhQJaOi8PGj9IguTitygcZtbZV6Mo9AzrTZDxodFfLiCeL9KF4aujOC6fGIfn/s1600/Class-Yes1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha0E8N_QYZDYjd6sv1MpfXx3X_c4JACxtCuLYG6tkqjyEXtNCHo6MJp09Ij8-hxS7t63VnIe4sY_v5Z5fRhQJaOi8PGj9IguTitygcZtbZV6Mo9AzrTZDxodFfLiCeL9KF4aujOC6fGIfn/s320/Class-Yes1.png" tea="true" width="320" /></a></div>
The First part of WBT that we us is called "Class-Yes". It is the most simple and quickest way that I have seen to get students quiet. The teacher says "Class Class" the students then respond "Yes Yes" However you say Class Class the students respond with Yes Yes that way. For example Classidy Class turns in to Yessidy Yes. Class Sir Turns in to Yes Sir. You can even invent you own. Some that we have come up with so far are:<br />
<br />
Teacher: Class Train, Student: Yes Woo Woo<br />
Teacher: Class Cowboy, Students: Class Yee Haw<br />
Teacher; Class Turkey, Students: Class Gobble Gobble. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3>
The Five Rules</h3>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGCCAQrz0Cskd28Pz_yQ7XGZcWuwU8bBDH-xY45v5UXjxyOBaAslj6RWnlodBRFc1KFE6ctEuzO9oofaQ5_UJ9BKzaG_AKUry5PYP2Hj9eXxjHIkyUjWOMxr9TQcOjZ91gotECyRpS8wc0/s1600/Procedures.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="147" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGCCAQrz0Cskd28Pz_yQ7XGZcWuwU8bBDH-xY45v5UXjxyOBaAslj6RWnlodBRFc1KFE6ctEuzO9oofaQ5_UJ9BKzaG_AKUry5PYP2Hj9eXxjHIkyUjWOMxr9TQcOjZ91gotECyRpS8wc0/s640/Procedures.png" tea="true" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The Second part of WBT that we use is the 5 rules. Each rule is posted on the wall and has a gesture that goes with it. We call them our “5 Procedures”. The Rules are listed below followed by a video of a third grade class of mine demonstrating the motions. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<strong>Rule #1: Follow Directions quickly</strong> <em>(the gesture: make your hand shoot forward like a fish)<o:p></o:p></em></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<strong>Rule #2 Raise your hand for permission to speak</strong> <em>(the gesture: raise your hand, then pull it down next to your head and make a talking motion.<o:p></o:p></em></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<strong>Rule #3 Raise your hand to leave your seat or area</strong> <em>(the gesture: raise your and, and then make a little walking figure with your index and middle finger.)</em></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<strong>Rule #4 Make Smart Choices</strong> <em>(the gesture: tap one finger to your temple as you say each word.)</em></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<strong>Rule #5 Make your PE teacher happy </strong> <em>(the gesture: hold up each thumb and index finger out like an “L” framing your face; bob your head back and forth with each word and smile really big!)</em><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/zwUo3GOFZMc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
</div>
<h3 style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Hands and Eyes</h3>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Whenever you want your students to pay close attention to an important point, say, "Hands and eyes!" Your students respond, "hands and eyes!," fold their hands and stare at you intensely. We have found that this command is also very effective if you have said, "Class!" and your kids are not entirely focused on you when they respond, "Yes!" We use this mainly with K, 1, and 2, but I have seen this done with all grade levels. </div>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
Lines Lines Lines</h3>
The last major part of WBT that my co-teacher and I use to manage our class is Lines Lines Lines. We use this command to have students stop what they are doing and line up. When they hear lines lines lines they are to clean up what they are doing and walk to line up. We use another version of this where we say squads squads squads when we want them to walk back and sit in their squads. <br />
<br />
Will the classroom management portion of Whole Brain Teaching work for you? Well first you have to buy into it. If you are worried that you will look silly this will not work, but then again if you are in the teaching field in general and are worried if students think your cool you might want to rethink your profession. In a later blog I will explain some of the other parts of WBT that works for us in our Gym, but if your interested right now check out the WBT website at <a href="http://wholebrainteaching.com/">http://wholebrainteaching.com/</a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09760757045921988244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8315386176927288811.post-65034119230250593042012-11-20T16:31:00.002-05:002012-11-27T14:10:38.796-05:00Organinzed Chaos!<h3 style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

How many times have you had someone come into your gym and say "OMG this looks like chaos"? Do not worry even the most organized gym will look like this at times. How could it not look like chaos when you have 20-40 students moving at the same time or doing six different stations. Most classroom teachers do not understand a gym because they have to give up a little bit of control and trust students to follow the directions given to them. I am the opposite. I go into a classroom and try not to fall asleep because there is way too much structure. The question you may need to ask your self about your gym is "is this organized chaos or just chaos in general"? This post will explain what we do in our Gym at PKES to keep the chaos organized from the moment students walk in the door to the moment they leave. I am going to give you a heads up early so that you are not disappointed, some of the techniques we use will be talked about later in a later post called Will Whole Brain Teaching Work in Your Gym and I will not go into a lot of detail about these specific topics in this post. </div>

This is question that many teachers run into at the beginning of class. If you have students sit in a different place every time they come into class then you have to answer this question every single class. If students have an assigned spot to sit in, then you will hear this question asked. If we can't have desks in our gym like they are used to in their classroom then give the students an assigned spot on the floor that they can call theirs. I have seen this done in many ways. The two most common ways are "the circle" and "squads". If you have a circle on your floor you can have your students sit on the edge of the circle. In this method the students know where to sit and you can begin teaching from the circle. The downfall that I have run into with this method is that if you wanted to use the smart or white board then you have move the students from your circle. The other issue with this method is you do not know which students are here or not here. You may know that you have 25 students in the class, but what happens if one goes missing during a drill or in transitions. </div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The method that I have found most effective is the "Squad Method". I need to thank my former co-teacher Rose Clawson for this idea. In this method I give my students an exact spot to sit in infront of the whiteboard. If a student is not here on a certain day the other students still leave his spot open. The squads are marked with colored tape and the students sit in their order every class. Students never have to fight over a spot, ask where to sit, and I can use my squad sheet to quickly find out who is here and who is not. To the left is an example of my squad sheet. The tape on the floor is marked exactly like the squad sheet.</div>

For the past two years I have used a whistle. This year I was introduced to the Class-Yes system. This system is the easiest and fastest way I have seen to get students quiet. The teacher simply says Class Class and the students respond with Yes Yes. This takes some practice, but it is well worth it in the long run. I will hit a little bit more on this system in the Whole Brain Teaching post that I will be working on soon. <br />

<h3>
<span style="color: #990000;">Can I get some Water? Can I used the bathroom? </span></h3>
The first thing I say to these questions are "I don't know... Can you?" I do not say this to be a jerk, but in my class if you are asking these questions, you must not know our class rules. We are fortunate to have a water fountain in our gym. The students know there are three times you can not get water. They are anytime we are in our squads, when we the teacher is talking, and when we are lining up to leave the gym. At any other point during class the students can freely get water. <br />
<br />
This works the same way with the bathroom. While do not have a bathroom inside the confines of the gym we do have one right outside the door. Students will raise their hand to leave their seat or area that they are in and then tell me they are going to use the bathroom. If we are not doing any of the things mentioned above and the pass is available they are free to go. They also know if they abuse this privilege it will be taken away. <br />

<span style="color: #990000;">Is timeout just for Kindergarten?</span></h3>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

Let me put a disclaimer on how I feel about "Timeout". I do not like to sit students out, but there are times when students need to take a break and think about what they may of done worng. Now I feel that it is important that even timeout should be grade level appropriate. <br />
<br />
Kindergarten through Second grade uses timeout which is marked with a box on the floor with red tape. They know where it is and they know what they are and are not expected to do when they are sent there. The teacher decides when the student gets to return.<br />
<br />
For Third through Fifth grade I use "The Penalty Box" It is essentially the same thing, in that it is the box labeled on the floor, but the rules are different. You can see the rules for the Penalty Box pictured to the right. The Penalty Box is a self timed timeout. The students go to the box and read the questions on the wall. When they feel they have served their time and have calmed down, they may find the teacher that sent them there answer a question or two and may reenter if the teacher feels the student is ready. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<h3 style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="color: #990000;">Line up Ready, Set, Go!</span></h3>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
If you use this method then you might have more students going to the nurse than going back to class. There are several methods I use in the gym to line up students. The first one is calling out different colors or articles of clothing that students might be wearing. If they have that color on then they will line up. You keep going until all the students have all lined up. The problem with only using this method is that it is time consuming.<br />
<br />
The most important thing to rememeber when lining up students is to make sure they know what you expect. My students know if they run, they will go back, walk, and be last in line. This keeps most of my students from running over each other when lining up. Of course you have a couple of hard headed students that think they are going to get away with it, but they don't.<br />
<br />
The method we use most of the time is Lines Lines Lines. This is another WBT idea. The students not only have to line up, but they must repeat lines lines lines as they walk and line up. Anytime during class if they here lines lines lines they know where to line up and what to do. This has worked really well and is a very quick solution to lining up. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: left;">
There are all kinds of classroom management techniques that can be used in the gym, but these are some that have worked for me. I feel that the most important tool in classroom management is to never run out of things to do during your lesson. Most of the time if a student is off task it is not the students fault. Most of the time it is that you have them sitting still or have not challenged them enough. Always have extra activities in your back pocket so that you always have something else to throw at your students.<br />
<br />
I am always open for new ideas that work better and more effective. If you have other ideas that have worked for you when organizing your chaotic gym please leave a comment. This blog is not just a place for me to spill out my ideas, but to also share best practices with all Physical Educators of all ages. </div>

My name is Kyle and I am a Physical Education teacher in the wonderful town of Fort Mill, South Carolina just south of Charlotte. I am married to my beautiful wife Cat and we also live in Fort Mill. I have always wanted to start a blog, but could never figure out what I wanted to actually blog about. Could I blog about baseball? Yeah I could, but there are so many blogs out there on people's opinions on baseball strategy and coaching. Well I love my yard... What about that? I am not a professional landscaper by any means so who would want to hear me ramble about my yard? Oh yeah, did I mention it is winter and I don't have any money to spend on yard projects right now. I thought I was all out of ideas when one day I was looking for teaching best practices. See I am a physical education teacher and my co-teacher and I are always looking for new ideas to better engaged our students and of course have more fun. Well...what I found in my search was that there are very few blogs out there about P.E. and most that were out there are not kept up or lack the details that would benefit other teachers anyway. At that moment I knew I had to write a blog about the new and creative things my co-teacher and are teaching and best practices that I have found through other teachers, conferences, and websites.</div>
